How to Pray Effectively

1. Become a born-again Christian

If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, the only way to Heaven, and the One who paid the price you owe for your sins, you’re not a Christian. It doesn’t matter how many good deeds you do or how much you go to church, you’re not a true Child of God.

Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Act 16:31 says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” For more information, read the Roman Road to Salvation or How to Go to Heaven.

2. Obey God

Harboring sin in our lives is a great way to ensure God doesn’t answer our prayers. Why should He bless us when we’re not living in the way He told us to live? Get right with God, as Him to reveal the sin in your life, and then repent (stop doing  it and make amends).

3. Read the Bible

Put down the phone and have a Bible study time alone every day. Read a few chapters of the Bible. Ask God to reveal His truth in them. This is a discipline, so expect Satan to fight you on this.

4. Pray

Every day. On your knees, if able. Pray the Word. Pray what God lays on your heart. Pray for God’s will to be done in other people’s lives as well as your own. Pray for guidance. Every day is National Day of Prayer when you’re a Christian. It is our great, unsurpassed honor to come to the Maker of Heaven and Earth in prayer.

5. Go to Church

We are commanded to “not forsake the assembling of yourselves together.” We are to encourage each other and urge each other on in good works. We fellowship as we serve together. We grow deeper in the faith as the Bible-preaching pastor expounds upon the Word.
